About this quiz

This quiz tests how well you know the world’s capital cities. Most rounds name a country and ask for its capital; about three in ten turn it around and give you a capital to place on the map. You have twenty-five seconds per round, with bonus points for fast answers and for a streak of correct ones.

Some capitals are classic traps: Canberra, not Sydney; Ottawa, not Toronto; Abuja, not Lagos. Hard mode leans into this by taking wrong answers from neighbouring countries and the same subregion, so every option looks plausible. Capitals that simply repeat the country’s name, such as Kuwait City, are never asked in reverse because they would give the answer away.

Countries whose capital is disputed internationally are left out of this quiz, and their country pages explain the situation neutrally. Each answer is followed by a fact card with the country’s name in both languages, its capital and its currency, so you build up a picture of each place as you play.

Questions and answers

Why are some countries missing?

Countries whose capital is disputed internationally are not asked in this mode. They still appear in the other quizzes.

Which capital do you use for countries with more than one?

The seat named in our data, such as Pretoria for South Africa or Sucre for Bolivia. The other capitals are listed on the country page and are never offered as wrong answers.

Can I practise only Arab capitals?

Yes. Choose Arab World, Gulf or Maghreb in the region picker before you start.
