About this quiz
From the Kuwaiti dinar to the Japanese yen, currencies carry a lot of history. Most rounds name a country and ask for its currency; about three in ten show a currency and ask which country uses it. You get twenty-five seconds per round, with bonus points for speed and for a streak of correct answers.
Dinars, riyals and pounds turn up all over the Arab world, so names are shown without the nationality and with the symbol, which becomes your clue: Riyal · ر.س is Saudi, Riyal · ر.ق is Qatari. The four options always carry four different names, never two dinars. A currency is shown on its own, as a banknote, only when its name and symbol belong to one country alone, so the euro, the CFA franc and the dollar are only asked one way round.
Hard mode takes its wrong answers from neighbouring countries, which often have similar names for their money. Every answer is followed by a fact card with the country’s name in Arabic and English, its capital and its currency. Palestine has no currency of its own in our data, so it is left out of this mode.
