Every GlobeQuizz game ends with a score, a number of stars and, if you have an account, some XP. This guide explains exactly how each of those is worked out, with real numbers, so you know where the points come from and how to get more of them.
Four-option rounds
Flags, Capitals, Languages, Currencies, Shapes and the mixed Geography quiz all work the same way: ten rounds, four options each, twenty-five seconds per question.
- Correct answer: 100 points.
- Speed bonus: up to 50 more points. You get the full 50 if you answer within two seconds, and the bonus falls in a straight line to zero at twenty seconds. Answer in four seconds and you get 44 extra points; in eleven seconds, 25.
- Answer streak: each correct answer in a row adds 10 points more than the one before, starting from the second. The second correct answer in a row earns +10, the third +20, up to a cap of +50 from the sixth onwards. A wrong answer or a timeout resets the streak.
- Compass hint: once per game you can remove two wrong options. It costs 40 points on that round, whether or not you then answer correctly.
- Timeout: if the twenty-five seconds run out, the round counts as wrong.
The timer stops while the fact card is open after each answer, so reading it never costs you points.
Prefer to think it through? Switch on Relaxed in the game settings. There is no timer and no speed bonus, so the best possible game is 1,000 points for the answers plus the 350 streak bonus: 1,350. Stars are measured against that, and the result card is marked Relaxed.
The perfect game: 1,850
Ten correct answers, each within two seconds, give 10 × 150 = 1,500 points. The streak adds 0 + 10 + 20 + 30 + 40 + 50 + 50 + 50 + 50 + 50 = 350. Together that is 1,850, the highest possible score.
Pin Drop
Pin Drop is different: you place a pin on a 3D globe, for a capital or for a whole country, and you have forty-five seconds per round. Points depend only on distance: 150 × e^(−km ÷ 1200), rounded. A pin inside the right country, or within 20 km of the right capital, earns the full 150. There is no speed bonus.
Some examples. Asked for Doha, you drop your pin in Manama, about 140 km away: 133 points. Five hundred kilometres away earns 99, 1,200 km earns 55 and 3,000 km still earns 12. A pin within 200 km counts as on target. The maximum for a game is 1,500. For Qatar, dropping the pin anywhere on the peninsula as a country question earns the full 150; on Bahrain, a small island, it pays to zoom in.
Stars
Stars compare your score with the best possible score for the mode:
- one star from 50 % (925 points in the four-option modes, 750 in Pin Drop);
- two stars from 70 % (1,295 or 1,050);
- three stars from 88 % (1,628 or 1,320).
XP and levels
With a free account, every finished game earns XP:
- one XP for every 10 points you scored, rounded down;
- 15 XP per star;
- 20 XP for your first game of the day.
So a game of 1,400 points with two stars, played as your first of the day, earns 140 + 30 + 20 = 190 XP. The Daily Challenge earns XP too.
Levels follow a simple formula: level n needs 50 × n × (n + 1) XP in total. Level 2 needs 300 XP, level 5 needs 1,500, level 10 needs 5,500, and level 50 needs 127,500.
The seven ranks
Your level gives you a rank, named after the stages of a journey:
- Traveler, levels 1 to 4
- Scout, levels 5 to 9
- Explorer, levels 10 to 14
- Voyager, levels 15 to 19
- Cartographer, levels 20 to 29
- Pathfinder, levels 30 to 49
- Ibn Battuta, level 50 and above
The top rank honours Ibn Battuta, born in Tangier in Morocco in 1304, who travelled for nearly thirty years across Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia, India and China, and left one of the great travel books of history.
Day streak
Your day streak counts the days in a row on which you finished at least one game, in your own time zone. Miss a day and it starts again at one; your best streak is kept on your account page.
Fair play
Scores from signed-in games are graded on our server, not in your browser: the server rebuilds the questions and checks your answers and their timing. Games with impossible timing earn no XP. It keeps ranks meaningful for everyone.
Put it to work
The fastest way to climb is consistency: answer quickly, keep your streak alive, and save the Compass hint for a round you truly cannot read. Start with today's Daily Challenge, ten questions across one region that never count towards your daily limit, then try a mixed geography quiz on Saudi Arabia and its neighbours with the Arab World filter.
